Arlington Unitarian Universalist Church
Welcome to Arlington Unitarian Universalist Church
We are people of all ages, many backgrounds, and many beliefs. We create spirituality and community beyond boundaries, working for more justice and more love in our own lives and in the world. Our congregation affirms and promotes seven Principles.
Our spirituality is unbounded, drawing from scripture and science, nature and philosophy, personal experience and ancient tradition as described in our six Sources.
What Moves Us? A Tapestry of Faith!
Love is our Doctrine
Love is the doctrine of our Church, to dwell together in peace, to seek knowledge in freedom, to serve humanity in harmony with the Earth
people are our heart
Being a Unitarian Universalist means taking personal responsibility for your own religious life. No one in our church will try to remake you or force you to accept a reigious belief. We affirm that your spiritual well-being is your to determine.
Open Minds & Open Hearts
We need not think alike to love alike. We are people of many beliefs and backgrounds: people with a religious background, people with none, people who believe in a God, people who don’t, and people who let the mystery be.
A Rich Heritage
Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religious tradition that was formed from the consolidation of two religions: Unitarianism and Universalism. In America, the Universalist Church of America was founded in 1793 and the American Unitarian Association in 1825. After consolidating in 1961, these faiths became the new religion of Unitarian Universalism through the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).
In our church, We believe that we can do infinitely more together than individually!
Our Beliefs & Principles
In Unitarian Universalism, you can bring your whole self: your full identity, your questioning mind, your expansive heart.
Together, we create a force more powerful than one person or one belief system. As Unitarian Universalists, we do not have to check our personal background and beliefs at the door: we join together on a journey that honors everywhere we’ve been before.
Our beliefs are diverse and inclusive. We have no shared creed. Our shared covenant (our seven Principles) supports “the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.” Though Unitarianism and Universalism were both liberal Christian traditions, this responsible search has led us to embrace diverse teachings from Eastern and Western religions and philosophies.
Unitarian Universalists believe more than one thing. We think for ourselves, and reflect together, about important questions such as:
-The existence of a Higher Power
-Life and Death
-Sacred Texts
-Prayer and Spiritual Practices.
We are united in our broad and inclusive outlook, and in our values, as expressed in our seven Principles. We are united in shared experience: our open and stirring worship services, religious education, and rites of passage; our work for social justice; our quest to include the marginalized; our expressions of love.
Sources of our Living Living Tradition
~Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;~Words and deeds of prophetic people which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;~Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;~Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;~Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit;~Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.
everyone is welcome
Each of us has worth and dignity, and that worth includes our gender and our sexuality. As Unitarian Universalists (UUs), we not only open our doors to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, we value diversity of sexuality and gender and see it as a spiritual gift. We create inclusive religious communities and work for LGBTQ justice and equity as a core part of who we are. All of who you are is sacred. All of who you are is welcome.
Special Occasions that promote Fun & Fellowship are an important part of our church life.
